Photo Blog: Secret Spot in Bushwick; THE YARD!

Here is a rarely seen space called "The Yard" locked away in Bushwick, Brooklyn.  It is a private space, not open to the public so I was more than honored to get in for at least one set of artists painting.   The Yard has a Wynwood / Miami vibe fore sure, especially as it was 93 degrees, sunny, humid,  and with a vast parking lot space covered in graff and street art. 
Much has been completed and I believe more will continue to go up this summer.  The pieces are a stellar combination of both outdoor styles from New York's best and those visiting us from abroad.

From Rio to The Bronx: "Faces On The Block" Brings Generations of Artists Together Uptown

An exhibit not to miss is entitled "Faces From The Block" at BronxArtSpace located at 305 E. 140th Street, Bronx, NY.   BronxArtSpaces invited Ananda Nahu and Izolag from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to exhibit their works alongside legendary Bronx photographer Ricky Flores which runs through August 8, 2015.  

Over the last eight years artists Nahu and Izolag developed a relationship with photographer Flores who grew up in the Bronx and actively photographers the borough in the 70s and 80s.  His images immortalized an entire generation of youth, teenagers, breakdanceers, stoops and abandoned buildings.  The Brazilian couple found parallels in Flores' work and their own environment and became inspired to create murals, paintings and drawings based on his iconic images.

It doesn't stop in the gallery.  Nahu and Izolag have been and will continue to create several detailed murals in the surrounding Bronx area including the Mitchel Housing Playground sponsored by Casita Maria with a grant from Bronx Health REACH, at Betances Playground off Brook Avenue, Mitchell Playground and outside local bodegas and area walls.  (The next blog on the couple will feature work in progress and finished shots from the mega mural at Betances Playground, stay tuned!)  

BronxArtSapace is only 20 minutes from midtown and worth the quick trip on the 6 train at the 3rd Ave/Alexander 138th St. stop.  Photos here do not do the exhibit just!  Must see, catch it soon as it closes August 8, 2015.  Hours are Wed. - Sat. 12 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
