Welling Court Mural Project To Emerge On 4th Big Year! Over 70 Artists From Around The World Are Coming To Astoria, Queens In June!

A short eight minute walk from my house in Astoria sits one of the most diverse interesting collection of street art and graffiti murals in New York City.   If you think Queens is only famous for 5Points, think again.  This 24/7 street-level gallery and public art experience named after the neighborhood, "Welling Court," is located at Welling Court, Queens in the Astoria/Long Island City neighborhood.  This giant gem of street art, murals and graffiti is now in it's big 4th year, beginning in 2009 as a group called Ad Hoc (www.adhoc.org) was asked to help the area spruce up the neighborhood.
In May 2010 they assembled a spectacular crew of legendary and emerging street artists spanning more that 50 years of works from over 90 countries.  Four years later, the Welling Court Mural project is not to be missed as it's growing bigger and more celebratory including not just amazing art from all over the world, but a giant block party of art enthusiasts, cuisine from ethnically diverse hosts, beverages and DJ's and music.
The group of New York City based and world wide artists promises to be just as huge and diverse as years past.  Some random iphone photos from last years completed murals are below....

Artists JR & Jose Parla Bring The Character Of Havana, Cuba To NYC!

International street and graffiti artist JR is everywhere these days.  His work and worldwide projects have recently been seen in New York's Times Square via the "Inside Out" project, the Bernarduad Fine China line and simply all over our city - and the majority of other cities (large and small), everywhere!  One other recent project/exhibit JR was involved in was with American, Cuban born artist Jose Parla with an exhibit at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in Chelsea for “The Wrinkles of the City, Havana, Cuba."  This is part of JR’s ongoing photography project documenting people in a given city who have endured the tests of time and have lines (and character) on their face proving it.

Cuban heritage of the Brooklyn painter Parlá played a large role in this collaborative street art project in Havana during its biennial, adding context to the marked and distressed walls that characterize much of this city.  JR supplies the photographic wheat-pastes and Parla hand paints the color, movement and additional detailing.  The result is stunning, have a look.

First, you'll know you're on the right street as first, you will see this amazing mural on the side of the gallery by the duo.  It's tough to get a great photo as the cabs are lined up at the gas station  right next to it constantly.  But, you get the idea of the size of this masterpiece in reference to the little cab!
The exhibit is on view until July 12, 2013 at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery at 505-W. 24th St. in Chelsea. Visit: http://brycewolkowitz.com for more information.

Graffiti + Color Explosion = Indie 184 "Fantasy" Exhibit In The East Village!

International graffiti fine artists Indie 184's solo exhibition "Fantasy" was held recently at TT Underground Gallery at 91 Second Avenue in the East Village.  Although the exhibit was only up a short time, you can check out these photos below and still purchase a piece of her amazingly colorful works by contacting her directly.  Each piece represents escapism painted through college compositions with graffiti, imagery, spray paint, acrylic, glitter and designed messages.  Mixed media are among my favorite works in general, especially hers with something new to discover each time you glance at the pieces.  Big news! Indie was also recently commissioned for MAC Cosmetics for their Summer 2013 accessories collection, I cannot wait!
Have a look at the show and her work....
