Six Years of Art Blogging! Fair Favorites: New Contemporary at Art Palm Beach International

This past weekend the acclaimed art fair Art Palm Beach took place over five days at the West Palm Beach Convention Center featuring contemporary and modern works by close to 100 booths from the area and worldwide. This big event is the premier mid-winter contemporary art fair on Florida's Gold Coast.  And, it marks the Art Salon's Sixth Year!

Starting 2017 With DENIAL!

The new year is starting off right with a group of art exhibits and art fairs underway in Miami, FL.  Last week the opening of "Anger Management" by Canadian artist DENIAL at WYN 317 drew a full house at the Wynwood gallery where viewers took in a variety of  contemporary pop-art themes that ultimately make fun of our insane world of consumerism.

Based in Windsor Ontario, DENIAL spends much of the year traveling and exhibiting throughout Canada and USA, having done solo shows in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Toronto and Vancouver - now adding Miami to his list.

Artist DENIAL

In 2000 he adopted the moniker ‘DENIAL’ as a means of poking fun at advertising, politics and media messages that contemporary society is often ‘in denial’ about.   Since then he has maintained an ongoing global street-campaign of over 500, 000 stickers, placards and murals, using the alpha-numeric characters ‘D3N!@L’. Intended as a conceptual means of marketing absurdism, DENIAL also challenges traditional notions of graffiti and public art through his bold and often satirical visual subversions.

"Pretty Dirty" - Marilyn Minter Retrospective Debuts at Brooklyn Museum

One of my favorite all time contemporary artists, Marilyn Minter, is now showing her exciting first retrospective of her work at a four-museum stop visit exhibit entitled "Pretty Dirty" at the Brooklyn Museum running thru April 2, 2017.  The show spans the Shapiro Wing on the 5th Floor, which we are lucky to have in New York City, along with Denver and Southern California.  I was thrilled to be invited to the press preview last week ahead of the shows opening.

Spanning more than four decades, the exhibition begins with the artist’s earliest artworks, from 1969 through 1986, including rarely exhibited photographs as well as paintings incorporating photorealist and Pop art techniques. It continues with works from the late 1980s and 1990s that examine visual pleasure in visceral depictions of food and sex. The exhibition culminates in Minter’s ongoing investigation of how the beauty industry expertly creates and manipulates desire through images.

Born in 1948, Marilyn Minter’s sensual paintings, photographs, and videos vividly explore complex and contradictory emotions around beauty and the feminine body in American culture. She trains a critical eye on the power of desire, questioning the fashion industry’s commercialization of sex and the body.   Have a look at a bit of the exhibit and view it all for yourself at the museum, a must see.
