Old NYPD Precinct Hosts A Graffiti & Street Art Event In The East Village!

This weekend an old, abandoned NYPD police precinct hosted a graffiti and street art show located at 327 East 22nd Street in the East village.  Curated by Robert Aloia, VNA Magazine, Beau, Todd Masters, NY st. Gallery & Suzuki Capital, L.L.C., with assistance of Savior El Mundo & Pesu, the station which was built in 1863 but has been empty for a very long time.  Neighborhood fact: It was only functioning for 50 years until 1914 and records at the time of closure indicated their were 9,500 arrests annually and this tiny slice of Manhattan alone had 37 brothels.  So, why not have a huge art party / pop up gallery throughout the four floors before it's demolition slated for late August (to build condos of course, because we do not seem to have enough.)

Throughout the floors, stairwells, rooms, bathrooms and holding cells you will see endless graffiti, wheat pastes, murals and mega installations by renowned artists from NYC and worldwide.   This is along the lines of the Surplus Candy exhibit this past winter with many of the same artists and countless sights to explore.  This will be the first of an ongoing series with Suzuki Capital and various properties throughout the boroughs.  I was lucky enough to attend the press preview this past Thursday evening and this is what I saw, without the huge crowds - which no doubt are there for the opening on Saturday August 16th.
If you missed tonight's event or couldn't bare the crowds, you are in luck as it will open again next weekend.  (See the bottom of the post for details and a list of artists.)
