Pragati Sharma Featured at the Contemporary Art Fair NYC 2014

It's "spring art fair time" in New York City with over ten fairs to choose from this coming weekend.
Coinciding with Frieze NY the Contemporary Art Fair to name one, includes 100 seasoned masters exhibiting sculpture, photography, glass, ceramics, furniture and more.

One of the artists highlighted at the Contemporary is Pragati Sharma.
Pragati is an emerging and fast evolving artist with several reputable shows and international recognitions in her bag.  Born in1980, in India (now living with her family in a small town in Connecticut), she has and travelled all over the country with her family that helped her learn early on about life through myriad cultures and traditions.  Living in such diverse places within a country taught her to quickly adapt to her surroundings, observe people and derive analogies in life.  Thus, the reflection in her art.
Pragati is an artist by passion and a methodical innovator by education.  She leverages this truly unique combination and uses exotic themes and techniques in her one-of-a-kind pieces.  She is a globetrotter and a storyteller by nature. Each of her works has a message to convey or a saga to re-interpret.  Pragati connects stories from world mythologies, draws metaphors from the animal world and creates aesthetically pleasing compositions that are truly unique in content.
She boldly experiments with assorted media in her visual interpretations and creates an abstract medley on her canvasses.  She loves dabbling with assorted media, but acrylic and inks are her favorite for their versatility and high saturation value.   The artist also designs her own techniques and tools to achieve the desired level of intricacies and vibrancy in her works. Her style involves highly detailed surfaces using motifs, patterns and textures inspired from crafts, world mythologies, ethnicities, music, environment, fashion, people and literature.
Pragati celebrates her strong architecture & design foundation but at the same time thinks that her lack of formal fine art training helps her skip the unlearning to move on in her artistic journey.  She strives to merge various forms of fine arts, performing arts & design to create a multi-sensory experience that can touch the audience in a positive and spiritual way.

May Art Fairs 2014 - A Quick List!

The May 2014 Art Fairs in NYC are upon us and many people are asking me for information, so I thought I would compile a quick list.  I half snagged this from Art Forum since the 25 post it's all over my desk won't help anyone.  Yes, Frieze does seem like a pain, if you don't feel like the haul to Randall's Island, there are plenty of fairs in the city and Long Island City.  Hope this helps and see you at the fairs!

Note: It's not your computer if you don't see the logs for each - been having some issues with that but wanted to get it out quick regardless.

You Still Have Time To Catch DESIRE OBTAIN CHERISH at Unix Gallery - Hurry!

One of my favorite artists upon first viewing in Art Basel Miami a few years back, LA based Jonathan Paul (aka Desire Obtain Cherish) has a brilliant show running at Unix Gallery until May 6, 2014, not to miss.

His work is is that of a critic and endorser of the the things we desire most.   Vibrant, colorful and sleekly produced art satirizes contemporary consumerism using its own visual language and almost makes a pun at the things popular culture feels they cannot live without.  Whether its designer labels, prescription drugs or unhealthy food the artist mocks them by creating detailed and beautifully crafted objects with a subversive edge.

DOC’s new exhibition ‘"We Are Known By The Company We Keep" is dedicated to a subsection of today’s consumer culture: the art world, its critics, historians, gallerists, and collectors. A fine art graduate from the esteemed Parson’s School of Design, he enjoys his rebel status while maintaining a high profile within the art scene. In a typically self deprecating manner he said “I’m not a painter, sculptor, printmaker or craftsman, and I often refer to myself as a con artist.”
From the gallery press: the esteemed New Yorker art critic Benjamin Genocchio characterized DOC’s work as “not malicious, even if his works cut to the bone. He is more like our social conscience, delivering up uncomfortable and unpleasant truths wrapped in the most beautiful and seductive of packages.”
His work has been decking the halls of venues, hotels and private collections in Miami, LA and world wide.  Learn more about Desire Obtain Cherish here:  http://www.desireobtaincherish.com

Event Alert: 106 Bayard in Greenpoint Hosts Mural Unveiling & Block Party!

106 Bayard is a non-profit organization an art project designed to celebrate the art of graffiti.  On Saturday May 10, 2014 they will host a block party in Brooklyn at their 3,000 square foot building (located at 106 Bayard Street) with a live DJ, food and drinks, and transportation to and from the 2014 Frieze Art Fair.
Attendees will also get to witness the unveiling of the inaugural 106 Bayard graffiti mural.  Each year, a group of artists will be invited to paint the wall to reflect a theme. To kick it off, eight artists were tasked with creating a collaborative piece that pays homage to the subway and wall graffiti of the 1970s and '80s. Futura 2000, Cycle, Wolf 1 AOK, Dr. Revolt, Lady Pink, Team, Part One, and Jackson each put in work, and students from the Williamsburg Charter High School will make a contribution to the piece as well.
Here's a look at what I saw the other day, yes, murals covered for now!
The curators are Gee Dajani and Keene Carse, hosts of East Village Radio's Forty Deuce who are contemporary keepers of NYC pop culture. Their passion for the art, music and styles that shape the cityscape includes deep respect for, and relationships with, both legendary and emerging graffiti artists from around the globe.
Visit http://106bayard.org for more information.

Note Rain Date:

In the event of inclement weather, the party will be postponed until Saturday,
May 17. Please check this website for postponement information.
